In the strategic plan released in January 2014, called Setting Priorities for the B.C. Health System, the British Columbia Ministry of Health identified the establishment of an academic health science network (AHSN) in British Columbia as an enabling mechanism to improve patient outcomes in priority areas at a population-based level.
Establishment of an AHSN was also a key recommendation of the BC Health Research Strategy.
In Summer 2015, work began on the development of an AHSN for British Columbia. An initial consultation in Fall 2015 confirmed strong support from stakeholders across the health, academic and life science sectors for a provincial AHSN.
On February 29, 2016 the British Columbia Academic Health Science Network Society was established as a legal organization.
BC AHSN is a non-profit organization (S-0062028).
